Today we are starting a series of posts here on the blog that will help you find out a bit more about us and our product selection, and bring you interesting facts about the importance of your diet.
We are what we eat, as we say in the Basque Country, and this is certainly true. Our diet affects us in many ways and reflects our state of mind, our behaviours, our emotions. And that's why we're focusing this first post of the series on the healthiest option out there: the Mediterranean diet.
Just last Monday The New England Journal of Medicine published a study on its website certifying the transcendence of the properties of olive oil and nuts, properly combined in the typical Mediterranean diet.
The New York Times' Health supplement published a feature on the study, carried out by Dr. Ramón Estruch of Barcelona's Hospital Clínico:
About 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals, a large and rigorous new study has found.
So, the findings of this major clinical trial prove, without a doubt, that following a genuine Mediterranean diet brings down the risk of suffering major arterial problems by 30%. This percentage is equal to, if not greater than, the risk reduction achieved by most medications used in primary prevention.

The facts are clear. If you want to live a longer, healthier life, don't forget to incorporate extra virgin olive oil into your diet daily. Eat more fish than meat (not vice-versa!), lots of legumes, vegetables and fruit.
We want to encourage you to change the way you eat! Avoid factory-made cookies, cakes and pastries and limit your consumption of dairy products and meats. It's better for you and for your loved ones.
